A fine Suku Mask

This authentic Suku helmet mask is carved with the strong, rounded forms characteristic of Suku art. The surface retains traces of original white, brown, and black pigments, and the wood shows deep natural oxidation, indicating an early to mid-20th-century origin. A small restoration on the top is visible (see photos), but the piece remains structurally stable and visually compelling.

Suku helmet masks were traditionally worn during initiation ceremonies for young men, where they played an integral role in guiding novices into adulthood. Such masks often represent deceased elders whose presence is believed to ensure successful hunting, assist in healing, and protect the wearer from harmful forces. When complete, they were mounted on a fibre collar—here only partially preserved—to be worn as full-helmet masks in bukishi society performances.

With provenance from the respected Gaethan Schoonbroodt Belgian private collection, this mask combines genuine age, a strong ritual context, and fine sculptural qualities—an excellent example for collectors seeking meaningful traditional Suku art.
