1. Building a Meaningful Collection

When it comes to building a collection of African antiques, it’s all about finding pieces that resonate with you. Over the past 30 years, I’ve had the privilege of helping many collectors—both seasoned and new—discover items that speak to them, whether it’s a ceremonial mask from the Dan tribe or an intricately carved statue from the Dogon people.

The key to creating a collection you’ll cherish is to start with pieces that genuinely spark your interest. Whether it’s the craftsmanship, the history, or simply the aesthetic appeal, your collection should reflect your personal connection to African culture. I’m always happy to share the stories behind the items in my shop, from their origins to their cultural significance and the previous collectors who had them, so you can fully appreciate what makes each unique piece special.

Another thing to keep in mind is that it’s not about how many items you collect but the quality and meaning behind each one. A well-chosen piece can become a real conversation starter, adding depth to your home or gallery. Whether you visit me here in Antwerp or explore my online collection at www.buyAfricanAntiques.com, I’m here to offer my advice and expertise to help you find the perfect addition to your collection.

Each antique holds a story, and it’s my passion to help collectors like you discover that story and make it a part of your own journey. So, whether you’re just starting out or expanding an existing collection, don’t hesitate to reach out—I’m here to help you navigate this fascinating world of African antiquities.

2. Safeguarding Your Collection

Once you've started your collection, preserving the integrity of these historical treasures is key. African antiques, like any aged artifacts, require special care to maintain their beauty and value.

Let’s talk about the environment first—these pieces have often traveled great distances and, like many antiques, they’re sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity. It’s best to keep your collection in a cool, dry, and stable environment. If you’re displaying wooden masks or sculptures, try to avoid placing them near windows where sunlight or moisture can cause damage over time.

When handling your pieces, it’s always a good idea to make sure your hands are clean and dry. Oils from our skin can sometimes affect the surface of older objects, and for particularly delicate items, you may even want to consider using gloves. But even without gloves, a gentle, thoughtful touch goes a long way in preserving these antiques.

Displaying your collection is, of course, one of the joys of owning African antiques. If you have textiles, for instance, think about placing them in areas where direct sunlight won’t cause fading. Wooden or metal objects also benefit from being rotated in their display to reduce prolonged exposure to light, helping them maintain their natural patina and integrity.

When it comes to cleaning, a soft brush or microfiber cloth will do the trick. It’s amazing how much beauty can be revived with just a gentle dusting. But stay away from harsh cleaning products or water—many of these pieces have a natural finish or patina that’s best preserved by avoiding chemical treatments.

At Buy African Antiques, we’re always here to help with specific questions about caring for your collection. Whether you drop by our Antwerp shop for a chat or reach out to us online, you can count on our expertise to guide you in keeping your antiques in top condition. After all, part of the beauty of these pieces lies in their age, and with the right care, they can continue to tell their stories for many years to come.
