Yoruba Ibeji Figure with Cowrie-Covered Tunic

Height: 25 cm
Length: 15 cm
Provenance: Ursula Voorhuis, Netherlands

This striking Yoruba Ibeji female figure is displaying a strong, classical facial structure with high cheekbones, almond-shaped eyes, and pronounced tribal markings. The coiffure is rendered with vertical ridges, a hairstyle frequently associated with prestige and careful ritual presentation.

What distinguishes this example is the beautifully preserved indigo-dyed textile vest, richly adorned with multiple rows of cowrie shells. Among the Yoruba, cowries were historically associated with prosperity, spiritual protection, and the favor of the orisha. Their presence on an ibeji garment reinforces the figure’s role as a cherished vessel for caring for a deceased twin’s spirit.

The figure shows an appealing, time-softened surface with signs of ritual handling, particularly around the head and torso. The textile and cowries remain intact, giving the piece a powerful presence and a sense of lived tradition. Such dressed ibeji figures were often lovingly tended with oils, offerings, and new garments by the family, ensuring the spirit of the departed child would continue to bring blessings.

Provenance:

Ursula Voorhuis (1932–2021), fondly known as the “Grand Old Lady of Yoruba Art,” was one of the most respected private collectors of Yoruba material culture in Europe. Over several decades she assembled an extraordinary collection of more than 6,000 objects, including an exceptional group of 550 ibeji figures. Her eye for authenticity and cultural significance made her a trusted reference among scholars and collectors alike. After her passing, her renowned collection was dispersed, and pieces from it—such as this figure—are now valued for their fine provenance and connection to her lifelong dedication to Yoruba art.

Coming from the collection of Ursula Voorhuis (Netherlands), this ibeji offers both authenticity and character—an excellent example of Yoruba twin veneration culture, suitable for collectors who appreciate pieces with strong ethnographic integrity and visual charm.
