Shango is one of the most powerful and venerated Orishas (deities) of the Yoruba people, associated with thunder, lightning, fire, justice, and dance. Historically, he was also revered as the fourth king of the Oyo Kingdom, embodying both the might of a ruler and the spiritual authority of a god.
This Oshe Shango staff, crowned with a double-headed axe, symbolizes the duality of his power—both destructive and life-giving. The axe represents the lightning he commands and the divine justice he delivers. In Yoruba tradition, such figures were held by priestesses during rituals invoking Shango’s energy for fertility, balance, and protection.
The sculpture’s dry black patina and serene, powerful expression testify to age and ritual use, making it a fine example of Yoruba artistry and spiritual symbolism.
