A powerful carved ancestor head from the Ekoi (Ejagham) cultural area of the Upper Cross River region. The work displays classic features of the region, including deep-set eyes, geometric cheek scarification, and traces of ritual attachments.
The rounded cap, reminiscent of early European bowler hats, reflects colonial-era influence and is occasionally encountered in Upper Cross River sculpture, often associated with status or historical figures of importance.
Rich surface patina and signs of age and use consistent with ritual function.
Coming from a private Dutch collection. The wood is well oxidized, I would estimate the age between the two world wars.
