Description
This mask belongs to the corpus of Songye Kifwebe, created within the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe society. These were not objects made for display, but instruments of authority, used in contexts of initiation, control, and social order.
What defines this example is the clarity of its construction. The surface is organized through regular striations, alternating pigments, and controlled volumes. The high sagittal crest indicates a male mask, associated with authority and presence.
The geometry is direct and structured: projecting eyes, a pronounced mouth, and a face reduced to essential forms. It is this tension between order and distortion that gives the piece its strength, and that later found echoes in the formal language of Cubism.
The mask shows an old restoration at the mouth, visible on close inspection. This has been taken into account in the pricing, without affecting the overall presence.
The presence of this mask in the collection of Mark Verstockt, whose work explored geometric structures, forms an interesting parallel.
