A mask with a strong architectural presence, built through layered lines and controlled symmetry rather than naturalistic modelling.
The repeated arches above the eyes immediately recall masks associated with the Mbunda tradition of Zambia and neighbouring regions, although the treatment here feels more restrained and inward. Less theatrical, more contained.
What gives the piece its strength is the construction. The face is organised with confidence: the brow lines, the cheeks, the tension between the dark surface and the lighter mouth area. Nothing appears overworked.
The surface has aged quietly, with wear consistent with handling and use. The expression remains calm, but firm.
A piece that holds its presence without relying on excess.
Provenance: Private Dutch collection.
